The story of Ilhan Omar, the first Somali-American member of Congress, took a sudden turn when a woman named Dr. Beth Mynett filed for divorce from her adulterous husband, Tim Mynett, a political consultant, The New York Post related what caused the collapse of the marriage.
“A Washington, DC, mom says her political-consultant husband left her for Rep. Ilhan Omar,” according to a bombshell divorce filing obtained by The Post.
“Dr. Beth Mynett says her cheating spouse, Tim Mynett, told her in April that he was having an affair with the Somali-born US representative — and that he even made a ‘shocking declaration of love/ for the Minnesota congresswoman before he ditched his wife, alleges the filing, submitted in DC Superior Court on Tuesday.”
Sex scandals in official Washington are as old as the Republic, ranging back to ones involving Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson. However, the one involving Ilhan Omar may be the first in which the public official is a woman. Certainly, the fact that Omar is a Muslim, a member of a faith that takes a dim view of adultery, especially when committed by a woman, is an eyebrow-raising affair. In her homeland of Somalia, someone who has done as Ilan Omar has been accused of doing can be stoned to death. The fact that Tim Mynett is white and a non-Muslim does not help matters. The story adds some spice to other rumors that Omar married her brother as a way to circumvent immigration laws.
However, following the Bill Clinton rule, sex scandals are not supposed to be disqualifying for a political career, though that principle has been modified somewhat by the #Metoo movement. The affair, by all accounts, seems to have been consensual.
However, Ilan Omar has allegedly introduced a monetary aspect to her extramarital fling. The introduction of what may be illegal payments in return for sex has brought the attention of electoral watchdogs and cries for ethics investigations,
According to the Washington Examiner, Tim Mynett served as a political consultant for Omar’s 2018 and 2020 campaigns as part of his firm called the E Street Group. The relationship sounds very suspicious.
“Of the $145,406 reported earnings by the E Street Group during the 2018 campaign cycle, $62,674 paid from Omar’s campaign. Not counting payroll taxes and transfers to Minnesota’s Democratic Party, E Street Group was Omar’s second-largest vendor, according to FEC data. From Labor Day through the end of the year, E Street Group ate up more than 10% of her campaign’s spending (not counting transfers to other campaigns).
“Here’s the odd thing: The overwhelming majority of Omar’s funds spent on the E Street Group were paid after she won the contested primary and during the totally noncompetitive general election race in her D+26 district. Contrary to FEC rules, Omar’s filings did not designate whether her E Street Group disbursements (or any of her disbursements) were for the primary election or the general election.”
The money paid to the E Street Group for 2019, an off-campaign year, numbered $160,000, one in three dollars spent by Omar’s reelection campaign to a firm owned by her alleged lover. Talking about pay for play!
Townhall reports that Omar has been hit with a FED complaint. The complaint alleges that Omar paid to compensate Mynett’s travel expenses while with the congresswoman. Mynett is alleged to have told his wife that his time away from her and with Omar was more concerned with the affair than with his job as a campaign consultant. However, in legally required filings, the payee for the travel funds is listed as Mynett’s firm, the E Street Group, and not Mynett himself.
In other words, Omar stands accused of violating campaign finance laws by paying her lover for his travel expenses while conducting the illicit affair with her but labeling said payments as campaign expenses.
Omar has already caused scandals with her vicious anti-Semitism, accusing supporters of Israel of being motivated by money and associating with virulent anti-Semitic and pro-terrorist organizations. She caused another scandal, along with her fellow congresswoman, Rashida Tlaib, involving an abortive attempt to visit Israel to campaign for the BDS movement, which wages economic war against the Jewish state.
When criticized in the past, Omar has responded with accusations of racism and Islamophobia. However, the congresswoman has been uncharacteristically reticent to discuss the most recent scandal. Pretending to be unwilling to discuss her “personal life.”
