Is the Ukraine scandal a part of a deep state conspiracy centered on the CIA to remove the president of the United States? The theory was recently posited by a former CIA officer on the Tucker Carlson Fox News show according to the Western Journal.
The Ukraine scandal seems to have fallen upon official Washington and the media that covers it like a bolt from the blue. The matter stems from a phone conversation that President Donald Trump had with the newly elected president of Ukraine last summer. What was discussed seems to depend on the eye of the beholder.
Congressional Democrats suggest that Trump was holding up arms shipments to Ukraine in exchange for that country’s help in investigating former Vice President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter Biden, who had gotten a cushy $50,000 a month job with a Ukrainian gas firm. Biden is on tape boasting that he had arranged for a Ukrainian prosecutor to be fired in exchange for air money. The same prosecutor was investigating Hunter Biden and his father for corrupt dealings.
The theory behind the impeachment inquiry is that Trump used his office to solicit an investigation of one of his main political rivals. The president and his supporters say that no such thing happened and that the phone conversation was innocuous.
An official complaint by an unknown individual known as “the Whistleblower” has come to light. The complaint, based on second-hand sources, takes the line that the Democrats are taking that the phone conversation was an impeachable offense.
Enter John Kiriakou, a former CIA counter-terrorism officer. Kiriakou served in Greece and then, after 9/11, Pakistan and elsewhere in the Middle East. After his CIA career, he served with the Senate Foreign Intelligence Committee as an investigator and then ABC News as a consultant.
While Kiriakou was with ABC, he disclosed the practice of waterboarding suspected terrorists. He was accused of disclosing classified information to journalists. He was cleared of wrongdoing by the Bush Justice Department. However, when Barack Obama became president, the Justice Department reopened the investigation on the behalf of the CIA. Kiriakou was convicted of disclosing classified information and was sentenced to 30 months in prison.
Kiriakou has a theory concerning the Whistleblower and who might be behind him. He noted that the New York Times has already identified him as a male CIA intelligence officer attached to White House duty. He also noted that the complaint document appears to be heavily edited and looks more like a legal document than an official complaint. He, therefore, concludes that the Whistleblower is a front for a conspiracy within the CIA to take down the president of the United States.
Kiriakou is urging that the United States Senate, still controlled by Republicans, open an investigation into the Whistleblower to discover what his true motivations might be and whether or not he is part of a conspiracy.
According to the Daily Caller, Carlson offered an opinion that CIA officers are starting to act more like “political operatives.” Kiriakou agreed, suggesting that the problem is “getting worse and worse as time goes on.”
On the face of it, Kiriakou’s accusations sound as if they come out of a 1970s spy movie, with a theme of a foreign intelligence agency going rogue and engaging ins a domestic political intrigue.
However, Michael Godwin, a columnist for the New York Post, agrees that the CIA holds a lot of antipathy toward the president. He recalls that John Brennan, a former director of the CIA, has had it in for Trump from the very beginning.
“Recall that CIA leaders worked with the FBI to spy on and derail Trump’s 2016 campaign. The then-head of the agency, the odious John Brennan, spread the discredited Russian dossier Clinton funded and continues his anti-Trump jihad from the bunkers of MSNBC. This is the same Brennan who had agents spy on the US Senate, then lied about it before confessing.”
Currently, the news is consumed with impeachment and Ukraine to the exclusion of all else. The fact that Adam Schiff, the chair of the House Intelligence Committee, knew about the Whistleblower complaint in advance deepens the suspicion that what Americans are witnessing is a plot to get rid of the president. How widespread the alleged conspiracy has yet to be determined, hence the call for an investigation.
