Donald Trump has finally had enough of the monument destruction wave that is taking over the nation’s leftists. His tweets definitely made the rounds but now it’s time to unpack them a bit. For starters, he is authorizing the federal government to make the necessary arrests when they come across the destruction.
In fact, people who have distinctive clothing and tattoos are currently being pursued for the damages that they have caused. Rioters who think that they are living in a free for all will need to think twice. These actions cannot and will not be tolerated. Trump is willing to track down the protesters retroactively and that’s not a surprising choice.
It was only a matter of time before he decided to come down on these people for their silly actions. Tearing down a statue is not a form of social justice and anyone who treats it as such is being willfully naive. The tweets have now become an executive order, so protesters are being placed on serious notice.
A new provision was added once the executive order was drafted as well. If state and local governments are found to have been lackadaisical when it comes to the protection of their monuments, they are taking a major risk when it comes to their federal funding. Federal grant money is going to be tied up if they are not willing to stand up for what is truly important.
The Justice Department is being told to prioritize the prosecution of any defendants who are found to have been responsible for monument destruction. Federal funding will be monitored closely and those who were waiting for Trump to take action are now as happy as can be. This is one president who is not going to stand for this type of destruction.
President Donald Trump on Friday ordered the Justice Department to prioritize prosecution of protesters who damage federal monuments and limit federal funding for local governments that are perceived to not be adequately protecting those monuments.
The executive order also emphasized strict sentencing, with a maximum of 10 years in prison, for those found guilty of such acts, a key plank of Trump’s law and order strategy the president has repeatedly tweeted and talked about in recent weeks.
Trump’s order comes as protests across the country against systemic racism and police brutality have resulted in the toppling of monuments to Confederate leaders, slave owners and European colonists.
The order characterizes protesters as actively seeking to undermine the integrity of the United States government — referring to them “Anarchists and left-wing extremists” — and comes a day after Trump labeled demonstrators as “terrorists” who will face “retribution.”
No one tell the liberals this but Barack Obama probably wouldn’t have either. He has felt the need to come charging into this media cycle to let everyone know that he would be doing much better with this moment than Trump did. Anyone who does not have a goldfish memory and recalls the commentary he had to offer during the Ferguson riots can definitely attest to that.
Strict sentences are being recommended to anyone who is found guilty of destroying monuments. They could face up to 10 years in prison if they are convicted. The rioters are currently undermining American integrity with their actions. The executive order refers to them as left wing anarchists and left wing extremists.
Trump has even gone so far as to label them as terrorists who are in need of retribution. While some might take issue with the description, it’s really not that far from the actual truth. If you were to ask the business owners who are trapped in these areas how they feel about what is taking place, we are willing to bet that they would agree wholeheartedly. Their livelihood has been terrorized for long enough.
No one seems to know what Trump has in mind as far as the federal funding is concerned, either. Congress controls this funding and while Trump will have some power to disperse them, it is unclear as to what he can actually do at the moment. If nothing else, he is going to rattle some cages and let the local governments know that they cannot sit idly by and allow the statues to be destroyed. We will see if his words are actually heeded.
“When the real violence started around May 25, 26, and so forth, we started using our joint terrorist task forces around the country. And there are 35 of them around the country,” Barr said.
“And now they are starting to go full bore, cranking out investigations, indictments against the people who are involved in this violence. So we’ve had scores of indictments already for such things as arson, destruction of federal property, things like that. And we have, right now, about 500 investigations underway,” he added.
Barr told Cruz and Knowles that groups of “provocateurs and agitators” appeared to be well-coordinated and often call upon anarchist groups to carry out violent criminal activity.
“They want to tear down the country. They are different than many traditional groups, and frequently, the signs of coordination and activity are very close to the event itself,” the attorney general said. “So like the morning of or the day before, and things are very fast-moving. But we definitely see signs out on the street of communication, of organization, of preplanning, prepositioning of things. So it’s definitely organized activity.”
Trump may believe that he can choke off funds through the Justice Department but those who truly believe in law and order are not going to stand for such behaviors. It would severely diminish his chances of being re-elected. Not to worry, though. Attorney General Barr says that there are over 500 investigations currently taking place. We would like to think that this would be enough to give all of the rioters serious pause but who knows?
